When you need a vitamin D test

Reviewed by Dr. Sanaa Ghoneim, Medical laboratory specialist 21 October 2026

You usually need a vitamin D test when your doctor suspects a deficiency, because of symptoms such as bone pain, muscle weakness or ongoing tiredness, because you have reasons that make a deficiency more likely, such as little sun exposure, or to follow up your level while you take supplements. The test usually needs no fasting and uses an ordinary blood sample.

Why vitamin D matters

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which matters for healthy bones and teeth. It also plays a role in how muscles work. The body makes most of its vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight. A smaller part comes from food, such as oily fish, eggs and fortified foods, or from supplements.

When your doctor may order it

  • Symptoms that may come from a deficiency, such as bone pain, muscle weakness, cramps or ongoing tiredness. These have many possible causes, so the test helps your doctor check rather than guess.
  • Little sun exposure, for example if you spend most of your time indoors, or your clothing covers most of your skin.
  • Bone problems, such as osteoporosis or repeated fractures.
  • Conditions that affect absorption in the gut, or some kidney or liver conditions.
  • Certain medicines that can affect vitamin D. Your doctor decides whether this applies.
  • Follow-up of treatment. If you take vitamin D supplements, your doctor may repeat the test after a while to see how you respond and decide on the dose.
  • Older adults and pregnancy, in some cases, as your doctor judges.

Does everyone need it?

Not necessarily. Whether to test is your doctor’s decision, based on your symptoms and circumstances. If you are thinking about taking vitamin D supplements, ask your doctor first whether you need them and what dose suits you, rather than starting on your own.
