The vitamin D test measures the form in which vitamin D is stored in the blood, called 25-hydroxy vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and supports healthy bones and muscles. Your skin makes it in sunlight, and it also comes from some foods and supplements.
Why a doctor may order it
- Symptoms such as bone pain, muscle weakness or ongoing tiredness, when your doctor wants to check your level.
- Little sun exposure, for example if you spend most of your time indoors.
- A condition that affects the bones, such as osteoporosis, or a problem that affects absorption.
- Follow-up of your level during treatment with supplements.
Preparation and fasting
A vitamin D test usually needs no fasting, unless other tests taken at the same time do.
- Tell us if you take vitamin D or other vitamin supplements, and keep taking them as your doctor advised.
We confirm the preparation with you on WhatsApp before your appointment.
Sample type
A blood sample from a vein, usually in your arm. Our technician takes it at your home.
