Do you need to fast for a CBC?
Reviewed by Dr. Sanaa Ghoneim, Medical laboratory specialist · 21 October 2026
The short answer: no, a complete blood count (CBC) usually does not need fasting. You can eat and drink normally before the sample is taken, because a meal has no important effect on the numbers of red cells, white cells and platelets. The main exception is when your doctor orders other tests alongside the CBC that do need fasting. In that case you fast for those other tests.
Why a CBC does not need fasting
A CBC counts and describes the blood cells themselves: red cells and hemoglobin, white cells, and platelets. These do not change in a meaningful way after an ordinary meal, unlike tests such as blood sugar and lipids, which are directly affected by what you have eaten. That is why most doctors and laboratories do not ask for fasting before a CBC on its own.
When you may be asked to fast
A prescription often lists several tests at once. For example:
- Fasting blood sugar: usually needs 8 to 12 hours without food, with water allowed.
- Lipid profile: often requested fasting.
- Iron studies: often requested fasting and in the morning.
If your CBC is ordered together with any of these, the simplest plan is to fast and have all the samples taken at once in the morning. That way everything is done in a single draw.
Tips before the draw
- Drink water. Being well hydrated makes the draw easier, and water is allowed even when fasting.
- Tell us about your medicines. If you take any treatment or have been unwell recently, let us know, and tell your doctor too.
- Wear something comfortable. A loose sleeve that rolls up easily helps the technician reach the vein.
- Do not change your medicines on your own. Even if you are fasting for another test, ask your doctor about your usual medicines.
What if you ate before a test that needs fasting?
If you were meant to fast for another test ordered with your CBC and you ate by mistake, tell us before the draw. We can then work out with you whether to take the CBC now and move the fasting tests to another appointment. Please do not keep it to yourself, because food can affect blood sugar and lipid results.
How to know exactly what you need
We look at the tests on your prescription and confirm on WhatsApp, before the visit, whether you need to fast and for how long. A technician then takes the sample at your home.
About your results
When your CBC results reach you on WhatsApp, discuss them with the doctor who ordered the test. Your doctor can understand them in light of your symptoms and medical history, and decide whether any further tests are needed.
