A lipid profile measures the main fats in your blood:
- Total cholesterol.
- LDL cholesterol, often called “bad” cholesterol.
- HDL cholesterol, often called “good” cholesterol.
- Triglycerides.
Why a doctor may order it
- To assess heart and blood vessel health as part of a routine checkup.
- If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease or high cholesterol.
- To follow up cholesterol treatment or a change in diet.
Preparation and fasting
A lipid profile is often requested fasting, usually for 11 to 14 hours, with water allowed. Some doctors accept a non-fasting sample in certain cases, so follow your doctor’s or our instructions.
- It is a good idea to avoid heavy, fatty meals and alcohol the day before.
- Keep taking your usual medicines, including cholesterol medicines, unless your doctor tells you otherwise, and let us know what you take.
We confirm the fasting and preparation instructions with you on WhatsApp before your appointment.
Sample type
A blood sample from a vein, usually in your arm. Our technician takes it at your home.
