A fasting blood sugar test measures the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood after a period without food. Fasting keeps a recent meal from affecting the reading.
Why a doctor may order it
- To check for diabetes or prediabetes, especially with age or a family history.
- If you have symptoms such as unusual thirst, passing urine often or tiredness.
- To follow up diabetes and how well treatment is working.
- As part of a routine checkup or before a procedure.
Preparation and fasting
- The usual fasting period is 6 to 8 hours before the sample, so it is often taken early in the morning.
- Water is allowed. Avoid tea, coffee, juice, any sweetened drink and chewing gum.
- If you take diabetes medicines or insulin, ask your doctor before the test day whether to take your morning dose before or after the sample, and do not stop your treatment on your own. If you feel signs of low sugar while fasting (shaking, sweating, dizziness), stop fasting, have something sugary, and tell us. Let us know what you take.
We confirm the fasting and preparation instructions with you on WhatsApp before your appointment.
Sample type
A blood sample from a vein, usually in your arm. Our technician takes it at your home.
