HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin)

Reviewed by Dr. Sanaa Ghoneim, Medical laboratory specialist 21 October 2026

What it measures

The HbA1c test measures the share of hemoglobin in your red blood cells that has glucose attached to it. Because red cells live for a fairly long time, it reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the past two to three months, not just the level at the moment of the draw.

Why a doctor may order it

  • To check for diabetes or prediabetes.
  • To follow up diabetes and see how well blood sugar has been controlled over the recent period.
  • It is often repeated every few months, as your doctor decides.

Preparation and fasting

HbA1c usually needs no fasting, and it can be done at any time of day. If your doctor ordered other tests at the same time that do need fasting, such as fasting blood sugar, follow the fasting instructions for those.

Some conditions can affect the reading, such as anemia, a recent blood transfusion or blood loss, or pregnancy. If any of these apply to you, tell your doctor and tell us. We confirm the preparation with you on WhatsApp before your appointment.

Sample type

A blood sample from a vein, usually in your arm, in a tube with an additive that stops it clotting. Our technician takes it at your home.

About your results
