Kidney function tests are a group of blood tests that give an idea of how well your kidneys filter waste from your blood. The exact panel varies with your doctor’s request, but it usually includes:
- Creatinine, from which an estimated filtration rate (eGFR) can be calculated.
- Urea (or blood urea nitrogen).
- Sometimes uric acid and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium.
Why a doctor may order it
- If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, which can affect the kidneys over time.
- Symptoms such as swelling in the legs or changes in how much urine you pass.
- Monitoring medicines that can affect the kidneys or that need kidney function checked.
- As part of a routine checkup or before a procedure.
Preparation and fasting
Kidney function tests usually need no fasting, though some doctors ask for it, especially when other tests are taken at the same time. Follow your doctor’s or our instructions.
- It is a good idea to avoid a large meat meal and hard exercise before the test, and to drink water as usual.
- Tell us about your medicines and supplements, including creatine supplements if you use them.
We confirm the preparation with you on WhatsApp before your appointment.
Sample type
A blood sample from a vein, usually in your arm. Our technician takes it at your home. Sometimes the doctor also asks for a urine test, and we will tell you how to collect it.
About your results
