An iron profile gives an idea of how much iron your body has. Iron is needed to make hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. Depending on your doctor’s request, they may include:
- Ferritin, which reflects the body’s iron stores.
- Serum iron, the iron in your blood.
- Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation.
Why a doctor may order it
- If a blood count suggests anemia and your doctor wants to find the cause.
- Symptoms such as tiredness, dizziness, paleness or hair loss.
- Situations such as heavy periods or pregnancy.
- Follow-up of treatment with iron tablets or injections.
- Sometimes to check for too much iron in the body.
Preparation and fasting
Iron tests are often requested fasting and in the morning, because blood iron levels change through the day and after meals. Water is allowed. Follow your doctor’s or our instructions.
- If you take iron tablets or vitamins that contain iron, ask your doctor whether to pause them before the test, and do not stop them on your own. Let us know what you take.
We confirm the fasting and preparation instructions with you on WhatsApp before your appointment.
Sample type
A blood sample from a vein, usually in your arm. Our technician takes it at your home.
