Liver function tests are a group of blood tests that give an idea of how healthy your liver is and how well it is working. The exact panel varies with your doctor’s request, but it usually includes:
- Liver enzymes such as ALT and AST, as well as ALP and sometimes GGT.
- Bilirubin (total and direct), a substance linked to bile.
- Albumin and total protein, proteins made by the liver.
Why a doctor may order it
- Symptoms such as yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine or ongoing tiredness.
- Follow-up of a known liver condition, such as viral hepatitis or fatty liver.
- Monitoring medicines that can affect the liver.
- As part of a routine checkup or before a procedure.
Preparation and fasting
Liver function tests usually do not need strict fasting, but some doctors prefer a fasting sample, especially when other tests such as blood sugar or lipids are taken at the same time. Follow your doctor’s or our instructions.
- Tell us about every medicine you take, including painkillers, supplements and herbal products.
- It is a good idea to avoid alcohol and hard exercise before the test.
We confirm the preparation with you on WhatsApp before your appointment.
Sample type
A blood sample from a vein, usually in your arm. Our technician takes it at your home.
